Vape kit formats explained
These terms describe different features, so categories can overlap. A pen-shaped device may use a pod, and a refillable pod can contain a coil below 1 ohm. A starter kit describes a package or product positioning rather than a separate technical standard.

Prefilled and refillable pods
Prefilled and refillable both belong to the broader pod category. A sealed pod is not necessarily designed to be opened or refilled. Refillable does not automatically mean the coil can be removed: a fixed-coil pod is replaced as one unit when its heating element wears out.
Vape pens
The pen label describes the shape. It does not establish the liquid compatibility, operating power, activation method or inhale style. Those details depend on the specific device and its fitted pod or tank.
Starter kits and bundles
The contents vary. A kit name alone does not confirm whether liquid, removable batteries or a charging cable are included. The package contents and manufacturer instructions provide that information.
Battery, controls and ongoing requirements
Battery capacity and charging
Battery capacity is commonly stated in milliamp-hours (mAh). It is not a guaranteed number of hours between charges: operating power and frequency of use affect runtime. USB-C identifies a connector, not a universal charging speed.
A built-in battery remains inside the device. A removable battery is designed to be taken out, but its size and electrical specification must match the device instructions. A cell marked 18650 describes a physical format; it is not a capacity rating.
Activation and adjustable settings
Inhale activation uses a sensor; button activation uses a physical control. Fixed-output and adjustable-power devices operate differently. With adjustable power, the fitted coil’s stated wattage range limits the setting. Airflow adjustment changes the resistance to the draw; it does not make an incompatible pod or coil compatible.
Ongoing requirements
The device, liquid supply and replaceable components are separate items. In a refillable system, liquid and either coils or complete pods are consumed over time. In a prefilled system, the replacement may be a pod or a combined refill assembly. Replacement frequency varies, so there is no single reliable daily cost for every device or user. Any cost comparison needs a stated period and the actual quantities used.
Pods, coils and e-liquid compatibility
A matching brand name alone does not establish compatibility. Pods and coils belong to particular device families, and different versions may use different fittings or supported resistances. The manufacturer’s compatibility list should identify the exact part.
Fixed and replaceable coils
A replaceable-coil pod retains its reservoir when the heating element is changed. A fixed-coil pod combines those parts in one replaceable assembly. Cleaning the reservoir does not restore a worn or burnt heating element.
PG/VG ratio and nicotine strength
Propylene glycol (PG) and vegetable glycerine (VG) form much of the liquid base. VG is more viscous, so liquids with a higher VG proportion require a suitable wicking design. Nicotine concentration is a separate measurement from the PG/VG ratio. A liquid’s flavour or nicotine format does not, by itself, establish that it suits a particular coil.
There is no universal liquid rule covering every pod. The device instructions and the fitted pod or coil specification take precedence over a general category description.
MTL, RDTL and DTL terminology
These terms describe the inhale and airflow characteristics. They are not separate battery types, and coil resistance alone does not define them.

A resistance below 1 ohm does not automatically mean a device is designed for an open DTL inhale. The supported coil, airflow and power setting have to be considered together. Manufacturer terminology may use either RDL or RDTL for restricted direct-to-lung.
Contents, charging and maintenance
The contents list identifies which device, pod or tank, and coil are supplied. Cables, adapters, liquid and removable batteries are not universally included. The presence of a charging socket does not mean every adapter is suitable.
Charging and electrical care
Use the charging equipment specified for the device. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, avoid charging overnight or while away from home, and do not cover the device during charging. Do not immerse the battery unit in water or modify its electrical components.
Filling and replacing parts
Refillable and prefilled systems have different preparation steps. Follow the specific instructions for the pod or tank. For a refillable assembly, the wicking material needs time to absorb liquid before the heating element is activated. The required waiting time and power range are product-specific. A sealed prefilled pod should not be treated as a removable-coil tank.
Disposal and recycling
Vapes and batteries need a suitable collection route, not a household rubbish or mixed-recycling bin. Follow local guidance for pods and refill containers as well. A pod is not necessarily battery-powered; its construction and residual contents affect how it is handled.
Questions about device care
These answers explain general terminology. A device’s own instructions remain the reference for its operation and care.
How long does a device or coil last?
They have different lifespans. A coil is a consumable whose condition depends on the liquid, power and usage. A fixed replacement interval cannot guarantee its condition. The battery unit can also degrade or develop a fault independently of the coil.
Does a burnt taste mean the whole device needs replacing?
A worn heating element may be responsible. In a replaceable-coil system, the coil and reservoir are separate; in a fixed-coil pod, the whole pod is the replacement unit. Stop using a burnt-tasting assembly and follow the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions.
Can a prefilled pod be refilled?
Only if its manufacturer explicitly designed it for refilling. A sealed prefilled pod and a refillable pod are different formats, even when they fit a similar-looking battery unit.
Can the battery unit be washed?
No. Do not immerse the electrical device in water. Cleaning instructions for detachable tanks or mouthpieces do not apply to the battery unit.
Are removable batteries and chargers always included?
No. Package contents vary. The contents list establishes what is supplied, and the manual specifies the supported battery and charging equipment.
