What are Vape Tanks?

A vape tank is the part of an electronic cigarette (vape) that holds the flavored liquid you turn into vapor. Inside the tank, there’s a small metal coil wrapped around a cotton wick; when the coil heats up, it soaks up the liquid and turns it into a mist you inhale.

Most tanks have a clear glass or plastic section so you can see how much liquid is left, and rings or caps you twist to refill or control airflow. They screw onto the battery-powered “mod” below with a common 510 connector, making them easy to swap out or replace. In simple terms, the vape tank is the container and vapor-maker all in one.

At Vapeforest, we stock only high-quality vape tanks designed for performance and durability. Whether you prefer a mouth-to-lung (MTL) draw or direct-to-lung (DTL) clouds, our range includes tanks for every style.

How Does a Vape Tank Work?

A vape tank stores e-liquid and uses a coil to heat it into vapour. Most tanks feature a 510 connector, allowing compatibility with various mods, such as pairing an OXVA tank with a Vaporesso device. Here’s a breakdown of key components:

  • Drip Tip – The mouthpiece through which vapor is inhaled.

  • Top Cap – Seals the tank and often houses the fill port for e-liquid.

  • Top Airflow Ring – Adjustable ring that controls the amount of air entering the tank.

  • Chimney / Barrel Section – Channels vapor from the coil up to the drip tip.

  • Glass Tank (Tank Tube) – The reservoir that holds the e-liquid.

  • Coil Head (Atomizer Coil) – Contains the heating element and wick that vaporize the e-liquid.

  • Base with 510 Connector – Secures the coil and attaches the tank to the mod via the standard 510 thread.

When you fill the tank, the coil wicks the e-liquid. Pressing the fire button or inhaling activates the battery, heating the coil to produce vapour.

Vape Tanks Components Explained

MTL vs. Sub-Ohm Tanks: What’s the Difference?

Vape tanks come in two main types: mouth-to-lung (MTL) and sub-ohm (DTL). Choosing the right one depends on your vaping style.

Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) Tanks

MTL tanks mimic the draw of a cigarette, making them ideal for ex-smokers or those seeking a tighter inhale. You draw vapour into your mouth before inhaling it to your lungs. Key features include:

  • Coil Resistance: Typically above 0.8 ohms for a smooth, flavour-focused vape.
  • E-Liquid: Best with nic salts or freebase nicotine e-liquids (50/50 or high PG). Browse our nic salt collection.
  • Airflow: Restricted for a cigarette-like experience.
  • Best For: Beginners or vapers prioritising flavour over clouds.

Sub-Ohm (DTL) Tanks

Sub-ohm tanks are designed for direct-to-lung vaping, producing large clouds and intense flavour. You inhale vapour straight to your lungs, similar to a shisha pipe. Key features include:

  • Coil Resistance: Below 0.5 ohms for powerful vapour production.
  • E-Liquid: Works best with high-VG shortfill e-liquids. Explore our shortfill range.
  • Airflow: Adjustable and open for maximum cloud output.
  • Best For: Experienced vapers or cloud enthusiasts.

Restricted Direct-to-Lung (RDL)

RDL tanks offer a middle ground, combining MTL’s flavour focus with DTL’s cloud potential. They use coils between 0.5 and 0.8 ohms and suit vapers who want versatility. Check out our sub-ohm tank collection for RDL options.

Comparison of Vape Tank Types

Tank Type Draw Style Coil Resistance E-Liquid Airflow Best For
Mouth-to-Lung (MTL) Draw into mouth, then inhale to lungs Above 0.8 Ω Nic salts or 50/50 high-PG freebase Restricted Beginners, flavour over clouds
Sub-Ohm (DTL) Inhale straight to lungs Below 0.5 Ω High-VG shortfill Wide open, adjustable Experienced vapers, cloud chasers
Restricted Direct-to-Lung (RDL) Direct-to-lung with slight restriction 0.5 – 0.8 Ω High-VG shortfill or nic salts Moderately restricted Vapers seeking flavour + clouds

Choosing the Right E-Liquid for Your Tank

When it comes to getting the best performance—and most enjoyable flavour—from your vape tank, selecting the right e-liquid is just as important as choosing the hardware itself. Here’s how to match your liquid to your tank’s characteristics and your personal preferences:

Match VG/PG Ratios to Your Tank’s Airflow & Coil Resistance

  • High-VG (70% VG and up)

    • Best for Sub-Ohm (DTL) Tanks: Thick vapor production, smooth throat hit, cloud chasing.

    • Requires: Wide-open airflow and coils rated below 0.5 Ω.

  • Balanced (50/50 VG/PG)

    • Best for MTL Tanks: Delivers a pronounced throat hit and clear flavour.

    • Works with: Restricted airflow and coils above 0.8 Ω.

  • High-PG (60% PG and up)

    • Best for Pod Systems & Nic Salts: Sharp throat hit, fast nicotine delivery.

    • Ideal in: Low-power coils (1.0 Ω+) and tight airflow setups.

Choose the Right Nicotine Type & Strength

  • Freebase Nicotine

    • Strength Range: 3–18 mg/ml.

    • Best for: Sub-ohm vapers who prefer lower nicotine levels but big clouds.

  • Nicotine Salts

    • Strength Range: 20–50 mg/ml.

    • Best for: Ex-smokers and MTL vapers seeking smooth, fast-acting nicotine at higher concentrations.

Tip: If you notice throat irritation or a sensation that’s too mild, consider adjusting the nicotine level by 3–6 mg/ml until you find your sweet spot.

How to Care for Your Vape Tank

Proper maintenance extends your tank’s life and ensures great performance. Follow these tips:

  • Prime Your Coils: Before using a new coil, apply a few drops of e-liquid to the cotton to prevent burning. Learn more in our coil guide.
  • Use Recommended Wattage: Check your coil’s wattage range to avoid dry hits or coil damage.
  • Keep It Filled: Don’t let the e-liquid run too low to prevent burning the coil.
  • Clean Regularly: Rinse the tank with warm water when changing coils to maintain flavour purity. Dry thoroughly before reassembling.
  • Store Safely: Keep your tank upright in a cool, dry place to avoid leaks or glass damage.

Avoid these common mistakes:

  • Overusing High Wattage: Shortens coil life and causes burnt tastes.
  • Leaving E-Liquid Sitting: Prolonged storage can oversaturate coils, leading to leaks.
  • Ignoring Coil Replacement: Change coils every 7–14 days, depending on usage, for optimal flavour. Shop replacement coils.
  • Improper Tightening: Over-tightening can damage threads; under-tightening may cause leaks.
