A vape with a replaceable coil separates the two parts that wear out at different rates. The pod, which is just a tank with a mouthpiece, lasts months. The coil inside it, the heating element and cotton, lasts one to three weeks. On a built-in coil pod you throw both away together; here you push out the old coil, push in a new one, and the pod carries on. Over a year that is a real saving, and coils come in multipacks.
The other benefit is choice. The same Nord or Drag pod takes coils from tight MTL resistances up to sub ohm mesh, so one kit can move from a cigarette-like draw to big clouds by changing a £2 part and turning the wattage up. What is the difference between a replaceable coil pod and a built-in coil pod?
A built-in coil pod is replaced whole when the coil wears out. A replaceable coil pod lets you push a fresh coil head into the same pod, so you only buy the coil, which is cheaper and gives you a choice of resistances.
Which coils fit these kits?
Each kit takes its own coil family: RPM coils for the Nord kits, PnP coils for the Drag kits and B Series coils for the Aegis Boost and Hero. The Coil and Pod Finder lists the exact options for each device.
Are replaceable coil kits harder to use?
Slightly. Changing a coil takes a minute and you need to prime the new one for five minutes before firing. In return you get lower running costs and adjustable power that a simple pod kit cannot offer.
Can I use nic salts in a replaceable coil kit?
Yes, with a coil of 0.8 ohm or higher and the wattage kept low. Fit a sub ohm mesh coil instead and switch to 3mg or 6mg high VG liquid, because 20mg through a sub ohm coil is far too harsh.
